johnwayne I was just thinking about who the Coens could possibly have in mind to play Rooster Cogburn in their upcoming adaptation of True Grit. I’ve seen many names thrown about as possibilities.  Michael Caine, Peter O’Toole, Tom Wilkinson, Nick Nolte, James Caan, and even Steven Segal.  To the latter, I say, please no.  In reading several different blog posts on the subject I noticed there’s even a little viral marketing campaign to get Val Kilmer considered for the role.  I think the most obvious choice, given Joel and Ethan’s propensity to use the same actors, is Tommy Lee Jones.  It just makes sense to me.  He’s around the right age, he’s a little rough around the edges, he’s got enough clout that everyone won’t be saying “he could never pull it off”, and he was brilliant in No Country for Old Men and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. I’d almost be willing to bet on it.  What do you think?

  1. Actually, if the coens are going to be more faithful to the book and focus more on the girl, the might also have the decency to cast an actor more appropriate to Reuben “Rooster” Cogburn…with that, Tommy Lee Jones is not the right age….like John Wayne he is far to old…Rooster in the novel is 40, not in his sixties.

  2. I didn’t realize the Cogburn was only 40 in the book. That opens up a lot of options. I was so sure it was going to be Tommy Lee.

  3. In the book Rooster is not only described as in his forties but as being Grover Cleveland-like in stature.

That suggests Goodman who is north of fifty but would absolutely kill. It would be a stretch for Phillip Seymour Hoffman but he’s up to it.

Just marching down the line of the already-worked-withs, Billy Bob might be good

  4. I could really give 2 shits, these morons can’t get an origional idea! Screwing up a John Wayne movie, I have seen the last movie I will ever see with shithead Bridges or gayboy Damon in it. Don’t fuck up John Wayne movies fuck up your own!

  5. Im surprised that the Coens didnt look at former pro wrestler and noted actor Terry Funk for No Country and True Grit. Terry Funk has been in many movies and holds his own…and he is from Texas!

  6. I would also like to say, if the Coens ever deciede to take on a Chinatown type project…say, maybe the Marion Parker-Hickman story…and THATS a big story in Los Angeles crime lore…Terry Funk would be a good fit there too….

  7. Val Kilmer would have been great as Rooster….but Jeff Bridges is a master craftsman and can more then hold his own with the high standard set by John Wayne
