Barry Pepper Joins True Grit

Barry Pepper is joining the cast of True Grit. He will reprise the role of “Lucky” Ned Pepper a notorious outlaw. “Lucky” was played by Robert Duvall in the 1969 version of the film. Pepper is perhaps best known for his role as Private Daniel Jackson the crack sniper in Saving Private Ryan.

Newcomer Hailee Steinfeld has been cast in the lead role of Mattie Ross in the Coen Brothers upcoming retelling of True Grit. Filming starts this month and the picture is due out by years end.

New Mexico bound

Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges will be getting a little dusty when cameras roll on “True Grit” the Coen Brothers latest attempt at adpating a novel. Production will begin next month in New Mexico. This represents a return to both New Mexico and Adaptation since the 2007 “No Country For Old Men”.

Bridges will assume the role of Rooster Cogburn the character made famous by John Wayne in the 1968 film version. Damon will play La Boeuf a Texas ranger who joins Cogburn on the trail of a murderer.

I for one and looking forward to reuniting The Dude with The Coens. Only good things can happen. Damon ought to fit in nicely as well. Josh Brolin is rumored to be joining the cast as well but nothing is official.

The Dude goes to the Dude Ranch?

Looks like Jeff Bridge’s is likely to play Rooster Cogburn in the Coen’s upcoming adaptation of True Grit. In an earlier post I speculated about who might play that role. For Some reason Jeff Bridges never came up. But fans of The Big Lebowski are probably stroking their marmots at the thought of this.

Who dares try to fill John Wayne’s shoes.

I was just thinking about who the Coens could possibly have in mind to play Rooster Cogburn in their upcoming adaptation of True Grit. I’ve seen many names thrown about as possibilities. Michael Caine, Peter O’Toole, Tom Wilkinson, Nick Nolte, James Caan, and even Steven Segal. To the latter, I say, please no. In reading several different blog posts on the subject I noticed there’s even a little viral marketing campaign to get Val Kilmer considered for the role. I think the most obvious choice, given Joel and Ethan’s propensity to use the same actors, is Tommy Lee Jones. It just makes sense to me. He’s around the right age, he’s a little rough around the edges, he’s got enough clout that everyone won’t be saying “he could never pull it off”, and he was brilliant in No Country for Old Men and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. I’d almost be willing to bet on it. What do you think?
