zhang_yimou The Chinese remake of Blood Simple debuted that the Berlin Film Festival.  Zhang Yimou replaced small town America with the Gansu province of northwestern China.  Instead of a bar owner it’s a noodle shop owner.  Sounds pretty amusing.  Yimou first saw Blood Simple at the Cannes film festival but without subtitles he couldn’t follow what was going on.  It wasn’t until years later that he saw it again with Mandarin and decided he had to remake it.

Joel and Ethan saw the film and were so amused that they sent Yimou an email explaining “They were amazed their film had been turned into a noodle story.”

I just stumbled across a story I’d never heard before.  Looks like McDormand almost didn’t get the role of Abby in Blood Simple because of a Soap Opera.  Not because she was starring in it but because she had to watch it.  Read the full story at legendsrevealed.com it’s the last story on the post.

Possible ‘Blood Simple’ remake

blood19 Did the Coen Brothers go back to the remake well one too many times?  Is that why there’s a rumored plan to remake their debut film Blood SimpleMonkey Peaches is reporting that Zhang Yimou has bought the rights to remake the 1984 thriller.  Zhang Yimou of House of Flying Daggers and Hero fame likens the story to a sandwich.  “set in ancient times… a complete story on the outside with a thriller and a comedy on the inside.”  Sounds truly bizarre.  I wonder if it will get a US release.
