New Mexico bound

Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges will be getting a little dusty when cameras roll on “True Grit” the Coen Brothers latest attempt at adpating a novel. Production will begin next month in New Mexico. This represents a return to both New Mexico and Adaptation since the 2007 “No Country For Old Men”.

Bridges will assume the role of Rooster Cogburn the character made famous by John Wayne in the 1968 film version. Damon will play La Boeuf a Texas ranger who joins Cogburn on the trail of a murderer.

I for one and looking forward to reuniting The Dude with The Coens. Only good things can happen. Damon ought to fit in nicely as well. Josh Brolin is rumored to be joining the cast as well but nothing is official.

The Dude goes to the Dude Ranch?

Looks like Jeff Bridge’s is likely to play Rooster Cogburn in the Coen’s upcoming adaptation of True Grit. In an earlier post I speculated about who might play that role. For Some reason Jeff Bridges never came up. But fans of The Big Lebowski are probably stroking their marmots at the thought of this.

Turturro Talks Lebowski 2

Here’s an interview with John Turturro were he talks about The Big Lebowski and the one project he wants to do, The Big Lebowski 2. He even says Joel and Ethan have discussed the possibility. This is probably the only Coen Brothers movie that ever gets sequel rumors. The likelihood of this happening is still low, but it would be fun to see. There’s a million possibilities for a sequel but perhaps a prequel is a better idea, I can’t imagine The Dude and Walter without Donny.

A Serious Graduate

In the upcoming A Serious Man there were 3 actors plucked from casting calls in Minnesota where the film was shot and takes place. Jessica McManus was one of them and she plays Sarah Gopnik daughter of Larry Gopnik our “Serious Man”. Seventeen at the time she’s now graduated from High School and is heading off to College. Here’s an article from her hometown paper the Post-Bulletin of Rochester, MN. Look for the film in theaters starting October 2nd.

No Cannes for Coens

It looks as though A Serious Man will not be ready in time for Cannes in May. Various reports are saying that Joel and Ethan will not be taking their latest film to the Festival that has treated them so well in the past.

Of the Coen Brothers films 8 of 13 went to Cannes. No Country for Old men, The Ladykillers, The Man Who Wasn’t There, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Fargo, The Hudsucker Proxy, Barton Fink, Raising Arizona all appeared at the most respected of film festivals.

The Man Who Wasn’t There earned them the best director award in 2001. Best Director was won again in 1996 with Fargo. In 1991 Barton Fink turned in the best results with 3 wins. The Palm d’Or the most prestigious prize, Best Director, and Best Actor for John Turturro.

With results like that it’s a shame they won’t make it back with A Serious Man. Maybe they’ll be at the Toronto film festival in September which is closer to the release date of October 2nd.

Who dares try to fill John Wayne’s shoes.

I was just thinking about who the Coens could possibly have in mind to play Rooster Cogburn in their upcoming adaptation of True Grit. I’ve seen many names thrown about as possibilities. Michael Caine, Peter O’Toole, Tom Wilkinson, Nick Nolte, James Caan, and even Steven Segal. To the latter, I say, please no. In reading several different blog posts on the subject I noticed there’s even a little viral marketing campaign to get Val Kilmer considered for the role. I think the most obvious choice, given Joel and Ethan’s propensity to use the same actors, is Tommy Lee Jones. It just makes sense to me. He’s around the right age, he’s a little rough around the edges, he’s got enough clout that everyone won’t be saying “he could never pull it off”, and he was brilliant in No Country for Old Men and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. I’d almost be willing to bet on it. What do you think?

London’s Daily Mail is reporting that The Coen Brother’s next, next project will be a recreation of the John Wayne classic True Grit. Not necessarily a remake, perhaps more of a retelling of Charles Portis’ 1968 novel. Full Story
