Coen Brothers Mop up at Cinephile Society Awards

Even though I’ve never heard of the International Cinephile Society I thought I’d report on the outcome of their 2009 awards since A Serious Man won their Best Film prize. They also won in the directing and original screenplay categories. The “ICS” was formed in 2003 and is made up of 60 journalists, scholars, and historians. Blah, blah. All I know is they have good taste.

A Serious Oscar Contender

Academy Award nominations are out and A Serious Man nabbed two nods. Best Original Screenplay for Joel and Ethan and Best Picture. If they hadn’t changed the format of the Best Picture category do you think A Serious Man would’ve gotten the nomination? I like to think so but I’m not so sure. If I were betting I’d have to go with Avatar or Hurt Locker but my heart is with Larry Gopnik.

Carter Burwell receives career achievement award

ASCAP has bestowed the honor of the Henry Mancini Award in recognition of his outstanding achievements and contributions to the world of film music. Joel and Ethan Coen sent a congratulatory video for the event which took place May 11th. Burwell has scored every Coen Brothers film except O Brother, Where Art Thou? Since they collaborated on Blood Simple which happened to be Burwell and the Coens’ first film. Burwell’s upcoming films include A Serious Man and Where the Wild Things Are. Cannes Line-up Announced

The 2009 Cannes line-up has been announced and as suspected the Coen Brothers are missing. Another Cannes favorite, Tarantino, will probably steal the show with Inglorious Basterds. Check out the full list over at Empire.

No Cannes for Coens

It looks as though A Serious Man will not be ready in time for Cannes in May. Various reports are saying that Joel and Ethan will not be taking their latest film to the Festival that has treated them so well in the past.

Of the Coen Brothers films 8 of 13 went to Cannes. No Country for Old men, The Ladykillers, The Man Who Wasn’t There, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Fargo, The Hudsucker Proxy, Barton Fink, Raising Arizona all appeared at the most respected of film festivals.

The Man Who Wasn’t There earned them the best director award in 2001. Best Director was won again in 1996 with Fargo. In 1991 Barton Fink turned in the best results with 3 wins. The Palm d’Or the most prestigious prize, Best Director, and Best Actor for John Turturro.

With results like that it’s a shame they won’t make it back with A Serious Man. Maybe they’ll be at the Toronto film festival in September which is closer to the release date of October 2nd.

No Luck at the Golden Globes

Burn After Reading was nominated for two golden globes last night. Unfortunately Joel and Ethan lost the Best Musical or Comedy award to Woody Allen with Vicky Christina Barcelona. Frances McDormand came up short against Sally Hawkins from Happy Go-Lucky in the best actress category.
